Princess Sylvia

Princess Sylvia and her three friends spent three months at the Research Station. They were busy, and they learned a lot. Sylvia did everything from mucking stables to recording data like all the royalty before her. At first, it was a bit off-putting, but she soon got into the swing of things. The discussions in the evening were enlightening. They were briefed on Michael’s theory about what was actually going on. That this was some sort of place where humanity could be saved if anything happened to the home world. And a bit of an experiment in changing humanity.

They discussed this in private. Her friends teased her that it meant that she and Brandt were doomed to be married. Something she objected to. Not because she didn’t like Brandt, but she wasn’t going to be told what to do about something so important.

When the three months were finished, they thanked the staff profusely and let them know that they’d all be back. They had so much to learn. On the way to Nordport, Sylvia told her friends. “I hope one of you finds a husband there. If not a husband, then perhaps a co-wife. We need the expertise. Also, we’ve got to spend a lot more time with Count Michael. He’s doing some things in Centralia, which will be important. Look at the steamboats.”

When they got to Nordport, they were welcomed and joined the extended family at meals. Lauden was trying his best to cut the ‘apron strings’ so that he could be more independent. Something he looked to his older brother to help him with. It was somewhat surprising that his mother had two boys.

The first few days found Sylvia and Brandt spending time together discussing things. Sylvia found him to be intelligent and a good sounding board. He helped her refine her ideas, reject some, and look at things she hadn’t considered.

“Brandt, we’ve got my father remaking the roads. That’s going to be a big help. We really need to catch up on agriculture. There’s just so much to learn.”

“So, Sylvia, you’re not the person who needs to know all of this. I learned that from my father. There’s no way I can know all of it. There’s just so much to learn. You might want to pick some young people to come here and study. They can concentrate on particular areas that would be helpful. Then they can take that knowledge back home.”

“That’s an excellent point, Brandt. I keep thinking I have to do it all myself or my friends and I have to do it. It’s not only agriculture. I got some education in medicine. I saw an operation. I thought I would throw up, so did Yvette and Donida. Rodna thought it was fascinating.”

“Ah budding doctor or a murderer,” quipped Brandt, and they both laughed.

“A doctor, I hope. But you’re right. I should talk to her about whether or not she’d like to be a doctor. But I’ll make her promise to come back to Turkmenia.
